About Us

Our Story

We opened our doors on September 25, 2000. My husband actually talked me into opening a quilting store. I was laid off from a corporate job in 1998 and purchased a longarm quilting machine in February 1999 so that I could work from home. I could not believe my quilting haven in McKinney closed in August of 1999 forcing me to drive to another town to purchase my fabric. It was after listening to my consistent whining about the commute that my husband Russ reacted with, "Why don't you open your own quilt shop?"

I continued to quilt for the public, but soon realized my true love was sewing and playing with fabrics. Once again Russ brought up the idea of owning a quilt store. Finally, on June 25, 2000, we were sitting on the front porch discussing the current state of affairs. Russ mentioned opening a quilt shop one more time. I asked him if he was ready for life as he knew it to be over. He said yes. I said I would look into it. Before I knew it, a space was rented, supplies were purchased, fixtures were built (by him in 100 degree weather) and we opened 90 days later with 300 bolts of fabric in my hometown of McKinney, TX. I truly believe it was God's plan for me. I haven't been in charge of laundry since and the rest is history!

We are honored to have been selected as a Top Ten Quilt Shop by American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine in 2006.  We were doubly-pleased when our original design quilt featuring Kaffe Fassett fabrics called “Nuts and Bolts” was featured on the cover of the magazine!

After 16 years, 43,000 bolts of fabric, being named as a Top 10 Quilt Shop, bus trips, parties, and all the fun you can imagine, I decided in 2017 to semi-retire and close our storefront. A *new* version of The Quilt Asylum has launched online with a carefully curated collection of designers, fabrics and projects. I considered retiring completely, but I just couldn't let go of the friends and relationships I have made over the previous 16 years. And I still get to play with fabric!
